Storm / Heavy Rain Day Predictor
How many "rainy day" plans do you need? When is the sea too rough for excursions?
Unique: combines rainfall probability with sea state — a day can be calm but rainy, or sunny but too rough to snorkel.
What this solves
SW monsoon (Jun–Nov) is wetter and windier; NE monsoon (Dec–Mar) is dry and calm. But "wet" in the Maldives usually means a 30-min downpour followed by sunshine — not all-day rain. Real excursion-killers are rough seas, not rain. This tool separates the two.
How to read results
- Rainy days expected: days with measurable rain (not necessarily all-day).
- Rough sea days expected: days too choppy for snorkeling or diving.
- All-sunny days expected: rare in SW monsoon — expect at least 1 in 5.
Limitations
Year-to-year variation is large. 2024 was wetter than average. This is climatology, not forecast.
FAQ
Are excursions cancelled in rain?
Rarely — boats run in rain unless seas are too rough. Diving is more sensitive to swell than rain.
When is the worst weather?
June and July can have multi-day south-westerly gales. May is the wettest month in many atolls.
