Dress Code Advisor
What to wear where — the Maldives is more nuanced than the brochures suggest.
Unique: explicit guidance for the in-between cases (resort dock when a local boat is around, Hulhumale beach at sunset, etc.).
What this solves
At resorts, swimwear is universal — bikini, speedo, bare shoulders, all fine. On inhabited islands, swimwear is not allowed in public except at a designated "bikini beach" — usually a small fenced-off section. Cover up (T-shirt over bikini, shorts over speedo) when moving around. Modesty in mosques is strict.
How to read results
- Bikini OK: anywhere on a resort island including restaurants.
- Cover up: bikini fine on the sand at a bikini beach, but T-shirt/cover-up required to walk through the island.
- Modest: shoulders + knees covered. No bikini in public.
Limitations
Some local-island "bikini beaches" are small and crowded. Even there, walking through the island in swimwear draws attention. Always have a cover-up.
