Alcohol Cost Calculator
Why a beer at a Maldives resort costs $8–$15 — and why local islands are dry.
Unique: explains the legal and economic reason (import duty-free resort concessions vs Islamic law on inhabited islands).
What this solves
The Maldives is a Muslim country. Alcohol is forbidden on all inhabited islands by law. But resorts operate under a tourist concession where they can serve alcohol — and prices reflect resort-only supply. Safari boats (liveaboards) operate similarly. Local-island guesthouses are dry — bring alcohol in only if the guesthouse explicitly allows it (most don't).
How to read results
- Resort total: drinks × nights × resort price.
- Safari boat total: lower cost if applicable.
- Local-island total: $0 — there is no legal alcohol.
Limitations
Importing alcohol to a local island can lead to confiscation and a fine. Some "boutique" guesthouses have a tourist-only lounge with alcohol; verify before assuming.
FAQ
Are there any alcohol-free resorts?
Yes — a few boutique resorts cater to Muslim travelers and don't serve alcohol. The Maldives is unusual in offering both options.
Can I drink in public on Malé?
No. Even at Hulhumale, public drinking is illegal. Hotel rooms and tourist boats are the only places.
